Mavericks – Lakers

Dallas Mavericks LA Lakers prediction

Dallas Mavericks will look to continue their playoff push when they host the dreadful LA Lakers, a team they abolutely owned in recent years. The match will take place Tuesday night / Wednesday morning (European time).

Dallas (26-36, 18-14 home) is playing great basketball right now and is just 2 wins behind the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. After a horrible start to the season, the hosts are finally healthy, they made some moves before the trade deadline and are clearly going for it. Dallas has won 4 of the last 5 matches and 4 in a row at home – all against good teams, bound or fighting for the playoffs.

The Lakers (19-44, 7-26 away) own the second worst record in the NBA and their current form might just be the worst in the entire association. After it became clear that this will be another very poor season, the Lakers appointed Magic Johnson as President and are now in full tank mode. They let go of their (arguably) best player, Lou Williams, and have lost 7 games in a row, putting on some dreadful performances as well.

Dallas is looking good at the moment and their recent home record has been impressive. They beat the excellent Thunder by 15 in their last game, a very solid performance.

As for the Lakers, they have been dirt poor on the road all season and they are playing arguably the worst basketball in the league right now. The recent front office moves making sure that LA will lose as many games as possible in this second part of the season, in order to get a high draft pick. The players obviously want to win, but even so there are question marks over their level of commitment.

The H2H between Dallas and Los Angeles has been seriously one sided over the past few years. The Mavs have won 13 in a row, most of those by large margins.

This season, the Mavs absolutely destroyed the Lakers, winning all three games by margins of 12, 12 and 49 points! That happened despite the fact that two of the meetings were in LA and despite the fact that Mavs were much worse than they are at the moment – while the Lakers were better.

Earlier in the season, the Lakers lost by 12 at home to the Mavs despite playing their best basketball of the year at that time, while Mavs were playing their worst (they were decimated by injuries and in the middle of a a run of 2 wins and 13 losses). Mavs won again by 12 in LA, before demolishing the Lakers by 49 in Dallas six weeks ago.

These two teams are going in completely opposite directions right now, Dallas is in great form and aiming for the playoffs, while the Lakers are in tank mode and have little interest in winning games. Looking at the H2H this season and the way Dallas owns LA, there seems to be little chance of a competitive match here.

Lakers will not lose by 49 points as they did in the previous meeting in Dallas, but I can`t see them coming close to keeping it in single digits. As the H2H proves, this balanced, solid Dallas team is perfectly suited to take advantage of an inexperienced, error prone Lakers team.

My tip is Dallas to cover the -10 point spread, which is not such a big margin in today`s NBA. While Dallas are no world beaters, I`m confident enough to invest 9 units on my bet. I won`t be shocked if the line goes up, so I`m taking it early. Prediction: Dallas Mavericks – LA Lakers 122 – 100.
